My name is LJ and I am a coffee addict. I live for my morning caffeine hit, and an americano is my pre-workout of choice. My ultimate weekend treat is a lie-in and a freshly made cup of the dark stuff – so yes, you can see, that I really do love my coffee. I’ve read a lot about Bulletproof Coffee and seen plenty of people post about it on social media, so when I found out that they were about to launch in the UK I couldn’t wait to give it a try and see what all the fuss was about. So the very kind team at Bulletproof sent me a Starter Kit (comprising of Supercharged Bulletproof Coffee and Upgraded Octane Oil) and I couldn’t wait to see why celebrities like David Beckham, Ed Sheeran and Jessica Biel have been drinking this pimped-up version of my favourite beverage.
Just in case you haven’t heard of it let me explain what Bulletproof Coffee actually is. You brew your filter coffee as normal, using the Supercharged coffee beans, and then blend it with a teaspoon of the Octane Oil (coconut oil which is 18X more concentrated than normal) and a tablespoon of organic, grass fed butter. Whizz it in a blender and you’re done! Not sure how that works? Check out a video of how to make it here. If you yourself haven’t tried a Bulletproof Coffee then I know what you’re thinking….. drinking butter in the morning? YUK! Well, me too until I actually tried it – and there’s a good reason for it too.
The Bulletproof way of life was created by Dave Asprey, who was a Silicon Valley investor and technology entrepreneur. He spent almost twenty years (and a huge amount of his own money) performing “Biohacking” experiments – a process of using science, biology and self-experimentation (in his words) to upgrade your body, mind and life. Bulletproof Coffee is therefore said to help you lose weight, stay focused, steady energy levels and combat cravings. The Bulletproof Coffee beans have been grown at high altitude and are optimised in every step of coffee production to ensure that performance-robbing mould toxins are eliminated (according to Dave, these toxins are present in 70% of other commercial coffee). This means that Bulletproof Coffee is incredibly pure and therefore offers a super-charged version of all the regular caffeine benefits – a surge of energy, improvement in mental performance, slowing age-related mental decline, oh, and that lovely, lovely coffee taste.
The Octane Oil supports energy metabolism at a cellular level – it contains the carbon chain C8 – the most ketogenic (fat burning) MCT in coconut oil. It converts quickly into energy and does not increase cholesterol as it is metabolised in a different way to other types of fat. It also helps support digestion and the immune system. Win win!
The last ingredient in the Bulletproof recipe is the unsalted, grass-fed, organic butter (I used Kerrygold when I made mine and bought it from Ocado.) The butter provides Omega 3 and a small amount of healthy, natural fat to curb cravings and help you feel full.
So – a cup of Bulletproof Coffee every morning is supposed to help you stave off hunger, feel more alert and give you an energy boost – the scientific facts are all there. But – how does it actually taste? And does it actually work? As I said before, the very kind team at Bulletproof sent me a starter kit as a gift to try and I’ve been drinking it now for almost a month to give it a fair trial. I know and love my coffee – and I absolutely cannot stand bad coffee – but in all honesty I absolutely LOVE the taste of Bulletproof. I didn’t think I would, I have skinny milk in my coffee not as a weight loss aide, but because I find whole milk far too heavy and creamy for my taste. If I ever have a flavoured latte as a treat I only have two pumps of syrup and most definitely no whipped cream – it makes me feel queasy. And yet, the richness of the butter in the coffee, especially when it is all blended up just gives it this lovely smooth taste – to me it genuinely tastes satisfying. I whizz mine for around 10 seconds in my NutriBullet and it comes out frothy, creamy and honestly delicious. You’d never know it had a spoon of butter in it – it’s not oily or fatty. (I’m not sure why but the first time I made it I was almost gagging as I couldn’t stop thinking about the episode of Friends where Rachel dares Ross to drink the glass of water with chicken fat in it as a dare to prove how much he loves her, and Ross keeps chanting “drink the fat, drink the fat”….. I’m weird I know but I couldn’t get it out of my head!) I was very pleasantly surprised at the taste. I almost always let out an inward contented sigh every time I sip on my first coffee of the day – but the Bulletproof definitely feels like it delivers that bit extra – just a really pure energy boost with no crash. I’ve used it a few times as a pre-workout and I’ve had great sessions every time (especially cardio I’ve noticed – definitely felt like I could push more after a Bulletproof).
There is one thing I will be honest about though – and that’s that I personally do have to be a bit careful with the MCT Oil. Because it is so concentrated and because I suffer from IBS, sometimes it’s a little too much for my stomach and I can feel a bit unwell afterwards. As recommended by Bulletproof themselves, I eased myself in to taking it – first I just added half a teaspoon of the oil to my regular coffee every other day, then worked my way up to a full teaspoon once my stomach got used to it. Whilst you are supposed to have the coffee on an empty stomach to even further boost the fat burning effects I personally can’t as it’s just too harsh on my delicate digestive system.(I find the same thing with strong green tea – if I drink too much on an empty stomach then I run into problems) To combat this, I have something very small like a juice, couple of dates or an oatcake with nut butter usually before I have the coffee so that there’s a little something in my stomach before the Octane Oil hits and does its work. If I go through a patch when my IBS flares up (which it has this past month due to stress) then I don’t have the coffee every day as it doesn’t help. So the one thing I would say about Bulletproof is that it is clearly much stronger and purer than normal coffee and coconut oil as it has such a strong and instant effect on my stomach!
Speaking of my stomach, I’ve only been drinking it for 4 weeks, and in that time I haven’t changed my diet or training in any way, but over the past ten days I have really noticed more visible abdominal definition and a flatter and leaner mid section. I am not saying this is directly because of drinking Bulletproof Coffee most days, but that is the only thing that has changed over the past month, so to me there has to be a link.
Coconut Oil, especially the highly concentrated MCT oil used to make Bulletproof is also great for boosting the immune system, meaning you will have less needs for things like this nail fungus treatment.
So – more energy, a flatter stomach, and a new delicious start to my day. Thanks Bulletproof – I’ll raise my favourite mug to that!
