You’d never think it from the way I have to have perfectly applied lipgloss at least 99% of the time, but I absolutely love to box and whilst I’m no Nicola Adams, I like to think I can hold my own with a pair of gloves on (boxing, not Dior before you ask!)
I was lucky to have been taught how to properly box 1:1 with a trainer several years ago and have done a course in pad work to allow me to do boxing training with my clients, but last week at the launch of Moreno Boxing in Clapham, London, I well and truly had my mind blown when it came to boxing technique and fitness.
Moreno Boxing Clapham is the second in the Moreno “family” – the original Dalston gym was set up in March 2015. Moreno prides itself on delivering a “real” boxing experience to ordinary Londoners who want to get fit without necessarily entering for a fight. The founder and namesake Carlos Moreno had his first fight aged 18 and several years later has amassed over 30 amateur fights as well as the National Championship Title which he took in Portugal in 2014. Carlos turned down multiple opportunities to turn professional and instead turned his focus to teaching, believing that proper boxing techniques and training can benefit everyone and I couldn’t agree more. Boxing improves your fitness fast, building strength, co-ordination and confidence, but it is something that is often done badly – both by individuals and in “boxercise” style classes by the instructors. This is not only a shame as those people won’t see the incredible results real boxing training can provide, but it could also be potentially dangerous. One of the things I absolutely loved about meeting Carlos and taking his classes was his intense attention to detail, specifically around technique. Moreno Boxing offers two different styles of classes: TIB (Technical Intensive Boxing) and IBXT (Intensive Boxing Cross Training) and I was lucky enough to try a taster of both, alongside some of my favourite fitness blogger friends.
Carlos spoke so passionately about his love for boxing and respect for it as a martial art – physically, mentally and spiritually. It’s clear how much he wants people to enjoy, but also benefit from correct training, and broke every single punch down with plenty of pointers of how to make them better, stronger and more efficient. In just 40 minutes of his TIB class I learnt so much and my punches felt more powerful than ever as a result. They were simple enough that a beginner could do them, but even the most experienced of boxers would learn something from this session. It’s also just a great way to let loose either on the pads with a partner, or on one of Moreno’s water filled punch bags!
Then came the IBXT Cross Training class – sandbags, medicine balls, battle ropes, dead lift bars…. the whole toy box came out to torture us! This class is definitely a full body workout, and as well as working with equipment there are still plenty of boxing drills. All you need to work on that fighting fitness (and this class most definitely will!)
I had a great evening of training with some awesome people, learnt so much, sweated a lot and ached a shed load the next day. And guess what – I can’t wait to do it all again soon!
If you’d like to try Moreno Boxing Clapham for yourself then please drop me an email and I can provide a free class code so that you too can enjoy the full Eye of the Wildcat experience for yourself….
